Peut-être vérifier le contenu du répertoire /var/log; c'est souvent là que s'accumulent des fichiers de très grande taille:
sudo du -ah /var/log | sort -h | tail -10
?

Tu pourrais commencer par supprimer tous les fichiers avec l'extension .backup (...d'oû viennent-ils? Jamais rien vu de tel dans ce répertoire pour ma part) et ensuite tenter un démarrage normal ?

Aucune idée non plus d'où viennent ces fichiers.
J'ai effacé les backup avec la commande rm, et j'ai pu accéder au bureau. Merci
Là, il y a une mise à jour de 147mo.
Une idée pour purger le système ?
Sinon vu que c'est la 16, je lui installe la dernière version en 32bit 18.04.7, comme ça on repart sur du propre....

Ton processeur supporte donc le 32 bits uniquement. Comme Ubuntu ne produit plus de version 32 bits, il te faut passer sur une autre distribution.
Si tu, ou l'utilisateur final, n'es pas très à l'aise avec les systèmes Linux, tu peux tester Debian Facile. Le site de support est à cette adresse. Si tu es plus l'aise, installe une Debian Xfce.

Mais, il n'y a plus qu'un support partiel des versions 32 bits.
Dans ce que tu indiques, c'est une version Lubuntu avec Lxde. C'est une possibilité, mais comme je l'ai écrit, le 32 bits est en fin de vie chez Ubuntu. De plus, comme il s'agit d'un PC avec des ressources limitées, une Debian fonctionnera mieux. C'est ce que je fait sur mes anciens PC en 32 bits.

Je pensais utiliser la 18.04 car sa durée de vie devrait l'emmener avec des mises à jour même partielle jusqu'en 2023.
Je pense qu'à cette date, il aura un nouvel ordinateur, 64bits.
Mais je prend note qu'une debian sera plus fluide.

En attendant, il semble que les gros fichiers de log système sont toujours présents.
Je voudrais vérifier si le service de gestion des logs fonctionne bien. Que donne cette commande ?

je n'ai pas proposé de suppression parce que, pour ne pas perturber le système (et la rotation ?) je pense qu'il faut garder le fichier kern.log.1.
(Les kern.log*backup, inhabituels, j'ignore si on peut les supprimer tout de suite).

Logrotate a l'air OK.
Tu vas déjà supprimer les fichiers de sauvegarde "kern.log" avec l'extension avec :
sudo rm /var/log/kern.log.1.gz-*
Comme il y a un fichier de grosse taille, je voudrais voir, avant de la remettre à zéro, s'il y a un problème qui rempli le fichier :
sudo cat /var/log/kern.log.1 | tail -n200
