Regardes bien ce xorg.log, il y a une ligne nommée (II) LoadModule: "nv"
Il devrait y avoir (II) LoadModule: "nvidia" dans celui ou tu charges les drivers nvidia.
A chaque fois que tu démarres X, le xorg.log est écrasé donc si tu redémarres avec les drivers nv, l'ancien fichier seras perdu !
Tu dois sauvegarder ce xorg.log au moment ou tu as l'écran noir (la tu fais ctrl-alt-f1 pour te retrouver en console et tu vas copier ce fameux xorg.log ou tu veux)
@Papou : le message d'erreur "xf86OpenSerial: Cannot open device /dev/wacom no such file or directory" est normal, il est présent chez tout le monde (enfin presque) !!
C'est parce qu'il y des lignes dans le xorg.conf concernant les périphériques wacom (des tablettes graphiques) donc si tu 'as pas de tablettes graphiques, tu te retrouves avec ce message d'erreur dans ton xorg.log....et ce n'est pas grave du tout !!!
Sinon, si ton affichage fonctionne sous 386 et pas sous generic, c'est certainement parce que tu n'as pas installé les linux-restricted-modules du noyau generic. Vérifies ca et tiens nous au courant !

@Lestat : Ben si, les linux-restricted-modules du noyau generic sont installés.
Je pense en rester là ( en attendant nouvelle update ) car mon système ( Athlon XP ) tourne bien avec noyau -i386. Que m'apporterait l'utilisation du noyau generic ?

Le problème était bien au niveau de linux-restricted-modules ...- generic qui n'a pas du se mettre à jour lors de l'upgrade du noyau 2.6.17-10.33 à .34.
J'ai rechargé les restricted modules et le serveur X redémarre, que ce soit avec noyau -386 ou -generic.

Les linux-restricted-modules sont en CONFLIT avec les drivers compilés !!! (c'est écrit noir sur blanc dans le tuto et des centaines de fois dans ce forum !!)

et les restricted...common n'ont auncune difference entre le 64 et le 32bits et ils sont liés au restricted-modules donc ne les installe pas !!
Si tu as des gels de ton systeme, c'est plus probable que ca soit le noyau ? quel kernel utilises-tu ?

Suivant un de tes conseils , j'ai utilisé envy pour mettre à jour mon module nvidia.
Ca beigne, y compris Beryl.
Hier soir : une nouvelle mise à jour des linux-restricted-modules 
... et écran noir avec Beryl 
.... un petit coup de envy et ça repart !

merci de ta réponse et toutes mes confuses pour pas avoir cablé
mais ca ne marchait pas quand-même et maintenant que je les ai désinstallés ca ne passe toujours pas.
et mon kernel est le 2.6.17-10-386
j'ai suivi ce tuto pour l'installer

sinon j'ai essayé avec le live cd de knopix d'un copain
il y avait des pixels manquants dans les ecritures de lancement
et ca beugait au bout de quelques secondes apres la tentative d'analyse du materiel.
et sinon encore la carte marche avec windows.
Alors du coup je comprends pas ca depasse mes maigres compétences.

À ceux qui avaient le même problème que moi.
J'ai trouvé la solution. L'accélération fonctionne parfaitement. Le seul problème, c'est qu'il se met à la resolution maximum et qu'il passe à un taux de rafraîchissement de 85 Hz. Dans mon cas (un CRT 19" merdique) il ne la supportait pas. Il a donc fallu que je baisse les résolutions dans xorg.conf de manière à me retrouver dans le cas où mon écran supporte le 85 Hz, et là, miracle, tout fonctionne, y compris avec le driver NVidia. Ensuite, une fois démarré, je me remets en 1600 * 1200 @ 70Hz depuis le driver NVidia et tout va bien, et mon pilote NVidia est bien là et fonctionnel.
C'est une solution provisoire que j'ai trouvé pour le moment, car je n'ai pas trouvé comment faire pour que l'écran de log ne soit pas en 85 Hz.
En attendant, je peux jouer à Crack-attack et utiliser Blender !

mais ca marche pas
c'est pareil:
pixels manquants durant le demarrage et ecran noir.
Je cherche toujours un moyen de désactiver la carte embarquée dans le setup mais je ne trouve pas
et je ne peux pas voir si il prend les 2 cartes en compte quand je demarre avec puisqu'il plante.
Il y en a qui comme moi ont des pixels qui merdent des le demarrage avec fx5200 avant l'écran noir?

en gros, le conflit, on le résoud comment ? 
désinstallation de nvidia avec NVIDIA-... --uninstall, ou même avec envy puis installation de nvidia-glx : ça laisse le conflit.
La seule chose que j'ai de résoudre ce conflit chez moi est :
- l'utilisation de nv (mais c'est invivable)
- l'utilisation du driver proprio nvidia - mais il plante aléatoirement et fais des sales trucs.

Pour l'histoire du conflit, tout est écrit dans le wiki !!!
Soit tu installes les drivers proprio/utilises envy, soit tu utilises les nvidia-glx, mais pas les 2 en meme temps !!
Si tu souhaites réutiliser les drivers nvidia-glx après l'utilisation d'envy, vérifies qu'il ne désactives pas les modules nvidia des restricted-modules (ligne DISABLED_MODULES="nv" dans le fichier /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common, cf. tuto nvidia.run)
Tu pourrais poster ton message d'erreur, ca pourrait nous aider à en savoir un peu plus sur ton probleme.

ca ne passe ni avec nv ni avec rien d'ailleurs
et au fait je me demande s'il n'y aurait pas un driver spécifique à ma carte mere qui est equipée d'un chipset n force?

@nianian : les drivers nforce sont deja intégrés au noyau d'ubuntu !
(cf. site de nvidia), rien besoin d'installer
